It is done.
Mikhail Grigorenko signed a three-year, entry-level contract this morning with the Buffalo Sabres to now have both of our first-round draft picks under a contract. I remember seeing on Twitter that many people were worried that Grigs may sign a contract in Russia because they like to make it rain in Ruskieland. No worries though, now he is tied to the Sabres for the next three years.
I know most people on the Twitter are now just trolling about Grigorenko possibly being eligible for the Rochester Americans (he isn’t), but there are others who actually believe that if he started off on the Sabres, he could be sent down to the farm club. Seriously? Read the NHL rules, people. He is not eligible yet to play for Amerks so he either starts with the Sabres and stays there or remains with the Quebec Remparts, which is his junior team. I have a gut feeling that he might just be good enough to start off with the Sabres this season.
Just imagine, him playing with Thomas Vanek on the top line and feeding him pucks all night. The dynamics of those two together might be enough to get the crowd into it again. At least until Girgensons and Armia are on the big club, I wouldn’t mind seeing Grigs and Van together making things happen on the ice. I’ll just sit here imagining my fantasy as you all go on about your day.
Who knows, Thomas might just smile after getting a goal now. Maybe.
